How can I get my dogs to get along?

I have a 7 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and I just recently purchased a 4 month old Australian Shepherd. The Aussie has become so protective of me. If I even try to pet the Cavalier, she will growl, snap, and even sometimes attack him. I love both of my dogs and would be ecstatic if they could get along! Please help!!
