Are internships in the USA usually paid for?

I'm studying Computer Science in Switzerland, and our study advisors gave us general guidelines on how much money to ask for. I am also looking for any internship possibilities in the US, but none of the offers so far mention if they are paid or not - is this generally the case or not?
