I'm allergic to dogs?

I'm almost sure that I am allergic to dogs. But I love them. I looked around and saw that I can get any type that is mixed with poodle. Is this true? And I know someone that is giving away a cocker spaniel/poodle mix, would that dog be fine with my allergies? And if not, what type of dogs can I get?
